The Coral Sea

The Coral Sea is a small, partially enclosed sea that lies north east of Australia off of Queensland. It includes the Great Barrier Reef in the west (off the coast of Queensland), and in the east it is bounded by Vanuatu and New Caledonia and the south end of the Solomon Islands touch the Coral Sea in the north. In the south of the Coral Sea, it merges with the Tasmanian Sea and in the north with the Solomon Sea. To the east it meets the Pacific Ocean and on the west side it meets the Arafura Sea between the Torres Strait.

The Coral Sea has a stable climate that is warm, and it is characterised with tropical cyclones and frequent rains. As well as the world famous Great Barrier Reef (now a World Heritage Site since 1981), the Coral Sea also contains many other reefs and islands. Previous to 1975 there were oil expansion projects taking place as well as a lot of fishing, however these were all terminated after this date.

The Coral Sea and all it’s containing reefs and islands have a wealth of aquatic life and birds that are all a huge national and international tourist destination. They are on the map for anyone travelling in the area, and rightly so. They are beautiful and stunning, with a variety of things to see and do. You don’t have to look far to find something that will take your interest, with many companies offering a variety of activities.
